Reasons Women Choose Implant Removal
- Your Goals Have Changed — Breasts feel too large, no longer want implants, or prefer a smaller, more natural look
- Changes Over Time — Breasts have become larger, sit lower, or changed after pregnancy, weight changes, or aging
- Implant Concerns — Rupture, capsular contracture, discomfort, or implant age
- Breast Implant Illness — Fatigue, brain fog, joint or muscle pain, or other systemic symptoms
To Remove or Replace Your Implants?
If you've had your breast implants for 15 or 20 years, you may find yourself wondering what comes next.
For many women, the decision isn't an easy one. Removing your implants can bring uncertainty about what your breasts will look like, while replacing them likely means facing another decision about your implants years from now.
There is no right answer. We'll consider how you want to look and feel today while also thinking about what makes sense for you in the future.

YOUR OPTIONS
Planning Your Explant
Your explant can be performed alone or combined with additional procedures based on your anatomy and how you'd like your breasts to look afterward.
Your Explant Can Include:
Breast Lift
Remove excess skin and reshape and reposition the breast tissue
Use your own fat to restore volume when needed
Provide additional support to the breast tissue when needed

What Will Your Breasts Look Like Without Implants?
One of the biggest concerns women have when considering implant removal is what their breasts will look like afterward.
During your explant surgery, we can also:
- Lift and reshape the breasts
- Restore volume with fat grafting
- Add support with an internal bra when needed
Saline Implant Deflation Before Surgery
During an office visit, I can deflate your saline implants so you can see how much natural breast tissue remains and get a better sense of how your breasts may look without implants.
Many women find this reassuring and helpful when deciding whether implant removal feels right for them.
What Is Breast Implant Illness?
Some women choose to remove their breast implants because they're experiencing symptoms commonly referred to as Breast Implant Illness (BII). Symptoms may include:
- Fatigue or brain fog
- Joint or muscle pain
- Headaches
- Hair loss
- Dry eyes or dry mouth
- Skin changes
- Anxiety or mood changes
- Other generalized symptoms
If you're concerned that your implants may be contributing to the way you feel, we'll discuss your symptoms and the current medical evidence so you can make an informed decision that's right for you.
What Happens to the Capsule?
The capsule is the layer of scar tissue that naturally forms around every breast implant. Whether it should be removed during explant surgery depends on your individual situation.
Capsule removal may be recommended when there is capsular contracture, implant rupture, or an abnormal capsule. In other cases, complete capsule removal may not be necessary.
Recovery
Returning to Normal
- A Few DaysReturn to work and driving
- About 6 WeeksGradually resume strenuous activity
- About 3 MonthsFinal results develop as the breasts settle
Your recovery will depend on whether your explant is performed alone or combined with additional procedures, but most patients are able to return to normal daily activities relatively quickly.
